VAWA

The Violence Against Women Act, or VAWA, provides critical protections for individuals who have experienced domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking. Despite the name, it applies to both men and women who have been the victim of domestic abuse.  To qualify for immigration relief under VAWA, applicants must meet specific requirements: they must be the spouse, child, or parent of a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident who has subjected them to abuse. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate that they have suffered substantial abuse and that they have a genuine relationship with their abuser. This process allows eligible individuals to file a self-petition using Form I-360, which can lead to a Green Card if approved. VAWA empowers victims to seek safety without relying on their abuser for immigration status.
